Does it mean there are places where discharging firearms is allowed? Anyone knows the context of this?

It's related specifically to duck hunting. There are other spots on those dikes where the discharge is firearms for duck hunting is permitted.

That whole region is a "Special License Hunting Area". So yes, assuming your paperwork is in order (and you're following the rules and regulations) you can discharge firearms for the purposes of hunting. In some areas that is restricted, as in the case of the photo you posted, for any number of reasons. This really is a testament to how little firearm/hunting culture persists in Canada. Especially so in urban/suburban areas. I still have people surprised to find out that you can even own firearms, let alone drive up on to crown land and shoot old washing machines.

We're mostly city folk these days so it's not that unusual, especially on a city reddit. Also, the people that are have to hide it because city folk freak the hell out. But I'm a double weirdo, licensed, doesn't own a single firearm, and has never held a loaded one outside of plinking once on a Jeep tour in the states. Firearms are just a tool, and one that I don't need.

I don’t know where this is, but you’re allowed to discharge firearms on Crown land as long as you meet certain requirements I.e you’re x amount of distance from a main road, etc.

AwkwardChuckle

Pitt meadows if you read the bottom of the sign.

cold2d

I think you can hunt somewhere close to there

abnewwest

Yeah, their are areas where it is allowed, but I can't remember what the rules are. There was a place by cultus lake where you would be walking on inches of brass that you could drive up to. But it came under municipal authority (I think), and that put a stop to it being legal.

IIRC there are several areas in the Fraser Valley/GVRD where you can discharge shotguns outside of official shooting ranges. I know for a fact that some places in Delta allow waterfowl to be hunted with shotguns from dikes similar to the one pictured. Rifles are more hazardous in built-up areas and are more restricted in the Fraser Valley. Edit: here’s a (shit quality) [map](https://bcfirearmsacademy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/legal-firearms-discharge-areas-in-lower-mainland-of-bc-BC-Firearms-Academy.jpg) that shows these laws for the eastern Fraser valley, although it’s accuracy isn’t guaranteed.

Yes, you can duck and goose hunt off the dykes if it's crown land, or on private land in that area.

The sign itself refers to "this section of the right of way" and doesn't imply anything about anything else. It wouldn't be surprising though if the sign was posted because people do discharge firearms nearby.

over on Neaves rd there are a few hunting areas a well as the dike along pitt river near the Alouette river mouth. in the 90s we watched them ever year as we fished coho, only once did we see them hit a duck and it still flew away to the other side of the river

sunset_stargazer

I think there's a private shooting range near there

I bike all these dikes all the time. The dikes north of here towards Pitt Lake see duck & goose hunters regularly, especially late Sept-December. It's a little freaky biking & coming across guys in camo with shotguns hiding in the bushes but you do get used to it.

AwkwardChuckle

There’s water fowl hunting areas in Pitt Meadows along the dikes FYI.
